Heaven, Man & Earth...

Heaven man & earth...i use this humorous expression to refer to the simplest and fool proof rule of design about accessories. Grouping accessories can be confusing and intimidating if you are not sure what goes with what. This guide refers to the use of differing heights for the placement of accents in groups of 3. This is probably the most popular way of displaying accents across the globe...you may notice in a lot of pictures in design magazines.....it always works!

In this picture, the shine of the tall mirrored plate behind the small golden candle are balanced by the matt wooden finish of the slim Japanese structure.

In creating displays for your home..go by this simple rule...a tall piece, a medium/ stout piece and flat/ low peice...this golden rule always works....the only other thing to remember is to display things that weave a story...like here the large painting has earth colors, the subject is vessels, is complemented by a tall iron vase....and a set of 3 woven baskets over a cherry shaker style buffet...the accents are perfect for the simple and linear style. also notice the scale of the accessories compared to the scale of the buffet.

A group of 3 always works when it comes to accessories...variation in scale is the key to create a dynamic display.

The two tall etegeres are filled with pairs of objects...the color scheme is muted....you can never go wrong with books. Here they look great stacked up neatly with uniform color paper covers ( an easy DIY project)

The table display has 3 differing heights. the glass candle jars provide sufficient interest and texture without being too distracting. The dynamic tree branch lends itself beautifully to the natural color theme.

One large photo in the center is balanced by 3 small ones in the shelf below. Flanked by sculptural items like the shells and corals...a good idea to display small items is to put in a transparent simple jar.

The two linear picture frames provide height, the flowers add the required dash of color and the woven basket is not only beautiful to fill the corner but also functional as an umbrella stand or anything miscellaneous.

Books, flowers, frames and lighting....these four things can be put in any arrangement and they look good..here the tall lamp and the small hand painted glass with flowers is offset by the frame set on top of a bunch of books. the books add the required height and lend visual interest to the table top collection.

Tanjore finials...shiny and matt, gold and indigo...great combination...set on a dark wood table...great display

Décor & Delhi…go hand in hand.

Having been in the design bizz for so long a time, it is occupational hazard that we cannot keep our eyes from roaming and scouting the environs for all things beautiful wherever I go…. Recently on my trip to Delhi, I took a whirlwind tour of the many markets in our capital city known for its bazaars…to indulge in cravings of my kind….home decor!

I took to the streets in search of the “Modern Indian Style” …. it is an exciting phase in Indian design history where our knowledge of the international seamlessly merges with our heritage arts & crafts. I shall reserve this topic for another day.

Here is my guide to the best interior decorating shopping in Delhi. Join me on my journey of discovery of a treasure trove of goods… from the odd and the obscure, the famous and the fancy.

Depending on the kind of wares you are looking for….you could go to Chandni Chowk, Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Delhi haat, National Craft Museum, Kirti Nagar, Karol Bagh, Cannough Place, Lado Sarai, Sunder Nagar, Sultapur etc

Today, let me take you to Khan market that particularly caught my attention… with many stores of international repute… Khan market is certainly the place to go for branded, high end décor. You can find Goodearth, FabIndia, FCML home, Renovation Factory, Second Floor Studio  and Sarita Handa among many home décor stores.

The quaint SARITA HANDA STORE in Khan Market takes us back in time to a more elegant era…of style and design. It is no less than eye candy…in plenty.

The store has a range of exclusive fabrics for custom upholstery and soft furnishings.. to pret e porter cushions, bed linens et all….the fabrics designed and manufactured in India seem to be an effusive and elated take on European style. Their primary forte being hand embroidered linens.

RENOVATION FACTORY…is another destination store. It has an array of accessories of very good quality standards. The design story is French country and colonial inspired. FCML: is a modern and contemporary accessories store. Following no particular style, the store prides itself for being a destination for trendy home accessories. Being a hotel industry supplier, it has a wide range of accessories… the largest I saw. it is a great place to find international branded products… polycarbonate furniture even. The products from table top accessories, vases, wall décor, and sculpture to name a few.

Second Floor Studio: for those of us that like fusion as a way of life, this is the perfect place to go to for ceramics, linens, leather accessories, one of a kind furniture pieces. and loads of curious accessories. It has a carefully curated eclectic collection including vintage and contemporary pieces and interesting fresh Indian designers like Joli Joli and Room 1701….
